Once we reach the top, we will be surrounded by plenty of Unkas trees, and many endemic plants of the area. If lucky, we can find a spectacle bear or see the national Peruvian bird, the Cook of the Rocks or locally call as Tunki in Quechua or Gallito de las rocas in Spanish, both animals are in danger, as there are only few left remaining. Finally we start exploring Llactapata an amazing Incan military sector of Machu Picchu, that according to archaeologists, was about same size or bigger than Machu Picchu. Here we get our first view of Machu Picchu Citadel and the famous mountains of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. Following the tour we start descending to Hidroelectrica with views of nice waterfalls during the next 2 hours. For today’s lunch we enjoy a box lunch in the middle of the river Aobamba, very clean water where you can jump in for a refreshing swim. Next is a path to walk on near the rail road and will take approximately 3 hours until you arrive to Aguas Calientes, by the foot of Machu Picchu, where we get views of the city from the Urubamba River. This section is very interesting because it is a trail that was used by the American Professor Hiram Bingham, who rediscovered Machu Picchu after centuries of it being lost. He walked along this valley looking for the lost city of the Incas, called Vitcus Vilcabamba and luckily he fell into Machu Picchu. You will pass by the farm of Melochor Artaega one of the guides of Mr Bingham. Finally upon your arrival to Aguas Calientes, you will enjoy a nice hot shower at your hotel, the dinner is booked already by us in one of Aguas Caliente’s local restaurants, where the guide will discuss with you tomorrow’s visit of Machu Picchu.

DAY 5: AGAUS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

• Meals: Breakfast, with snacks
• Walking distance: Veritable
• Walking Hours: 3-4 hrs/easy-moderate

On Day 5 we will take the early bus to Machu Picchu insuring we arrive at the main gates well before the crowds. Here our guide will lead you on a 2 hour tour of the Citadel of Machu Picchu. Following this tour you will be guided to the Machu Picchu Mountain entry where you will enjoy the included climb to the summit. Alternatively you may wish to discuss with your guide the option of hiking to the Sun-Gate and Inca Bridge where you can explore further this wonderful historical site. After this hike you’ll have some spare time to stroll around on your own and then take the return bus to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time to shop and enjoy a drink or snack as you stroll through the cobblestone streets of this mountain village. Finally, you will board the afternoon train and we will have one of our drivers waiting for you at the train station and drive you back to your Cusco hotel.

6-DAY SALKANTAY TREK PLUS INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU TOUR DETAILS

The Lares Trek is a magnificent trek into Machu Picchu and Guiding Peru refers to our Lares Trek as the “hidden trail trek”, due to it’s remote location. This is considered to be the highest pass of the trek. On the trail, you will get a chance to take a break here and enjoy some cold beverages at a local village shop before reaching the pass. This beautiful trail will take us to the Pacaymayu Valley (Hidden River). From this site, the summit will be another 1.5 hours further. On the day 6 we need to wake up at 6:00 am to experience and enjoy the most beautiful day on the Inca Trail. We will start hiking for about 1.25 hours in solitude, which will give us immense pleasure. In this section of the Inca Trail you will come across the most fascinating of Incan pathways, which leads us to the amazing cloud forest (more commonly known as the high jungle). As we walk on this trail, we will get the opportunity to see the sacred and majestic Salcantay mountain, which is the second highest snow-capped mountain in the region. After enjoying this incredible view, we will be at the Phuyupatamarka (3600 meters), the third pass. Here, we will come across some incredible views overlooking the Urubamba River, snow-capped mountains of the Urubamba mountain range, Machu Picchu Mountain, and the archaeological site of Puyupatamarca. From Phuyupatamarka, we will hike down for about 3 hours over 2700 steps to our last campsite- Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young). This site is the most spectacular Inca site on the trail after Machu Picchu and considered the closest campground to Machu Picchu City. Today, we will arrive early at our campsite, around 1:00 pm,to enjoy lunch. Here, we will relax the whole afternoon to recharge our energies for tomorrow’s entry into Machu Picchu. In the afternoon, we will have plenty of time (before the other groups arrive) to explore many Inca sites and the spectacular Wiñayhuayna. Your guide will give you the essential information about the significance of the sites and help in understanding the purpose of the majestic Machu Picchu. The last night of the celebration we will practice the Inca Trail tradition of reciprocity and organize a goodbye ceremony for our team of porters, cooks, and guides. Your chef will serve you a spectacular dinner presentation this evening. You need to go early to your bed in order to wake up early the next morning, to reach the Sun Gate before other groups arrive. This will help you enjoy a few minutes alone in the peace of the scenery of Machu Picchu.

SECOND DAY: ECHARATE – IVOCHOTE – PONGO DE MAINIQUE (PERUVIAN NATIONAL SANCTUARY RESERVE

• Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
• Highest Elevation: 3136ft.
• River Difficulty: moderate, between May to November. Challenging during raining season between December to
April.
• Area: jungle very hot all day long.
• Campsite elevation: 1344ft. Today we start very early for a drive of 4 hours, along the amazing high jungle, called the gate of the jungle, Pongo De Mainique (1344ft.).

Following an early morning breakfast we will drive by private van for 2 hours until we reach Ivochote Community (1654ft.) at the extreme end of the road, leading into the Pongo. Here is where we change our transportation to a long boat that will take us to the Natural Sanctuary of Megantoni (A protected area situated in the Cuzco region, La Convencion province, Echarate District). It protects a part of the Peruvian Vungas Eco region which covers an area of 215,868.96Ha. Established as the Megantoni National Sanctuary since August 18, 2004, it is the most amazing canyon on the Urubamba River. A natural beauty, full of wildlife such as giant butterflies, macaws, parrots, and the most diverse variety of insects. The Urubamba River has about 70 species of fish, endemic to this region. In Ivochote, we will meet our local boat captain for our two days on the Pongo, we start the journey by long-boat through some very remote communities on the way to the Pongo. We travel for about one hour in calm waters, enjoying the amazing scenery of the Inca Jungle, until we arrive at a small beach, welcoming us to the Pongo. This beach, full of rocks, is carved by the Incas and the first civilizations of the area where they wrote the direction to the lost city of the Incas, El Paititi or as other people call it, el Dorado. Here we will find a natural formation of an Incan face profile, showing us the first rapids to pass into the middle of two natural walls of rocks that creates the Pongo formation. Geographically ,this is a deep canyon formed in a serpentine way, that creates challenging rapids full of adrenaline for us to cross as we travel through the amazing jungle. This section lasts for about 30 minutes, crossing the Pongo the river gets calmer, with spectacular scenery of waterfalls on both sides of the canyon. Here is where we stop for a refreshing swim and a natural waterfall shower, with the purist waters in the world, as we enjoy this paradise. Our lunch will be on the rocks near the waterfalls that will be unforgettable. After this, we go for about 15 minutes more downriver to our campsite. Here we will leave our chef and our camping gear, and go down the river to try our luck fishing and enjoy the waters for swimming. We then go back to the camp and have rest in the beach before we begin our 2 hour hike through the forests along a small river stream, enjoying the best views of the Amazon. Tonight’s dinner will include fish from the river at the campsite, a camp fire and sleep in solitude as we will be the only people here, among the sounds of the river and wildlife.

Here we will have the opportunity to observe traditional farming techniques as we explore the farm’s tropical orchards and rows of yucca and maize. We will learn of the value of coco plants and have the opportunity to pick, roast and taste the wonderful coffee from this high jungle region. After which we will have the option to purchase the coffee grown and roasted from our hosts. At the farm we will enjoy a traditional bbq chicken lunch, roasted over an open grill of hot coals. The hiking starts at km 82, Piscacucho, the location of the main checkpoint (please make sure you have your original passport with you to enter the Inca Trail). The first 2 hours of hiking are relatively easy, reaching the first Inca site- Patallacta that was an amazing administrative point of the Sacred Valley. From Patallacta it will be another 2 hours of hiking to our lunch stop around the first camping area of the trail Hatunchaca. After enjoying our chef-prepared lunch, we hike about 2.5 hours to reach our first night’s campground at Ayapata (3300 meters). Guiding Peru chooses this campsite because it is quieter than the others and allows us to continue traveling ahead of the many other groups on the Inca Trail. This can prove to be the most difficult and challenging day of the 4-day Inca Trail trek! The hiking will begin for roughly 4 hours to Warmiwañuska pass (the Dead Woman’s Pass) at 4215 meters, which is the highest pass of the trek. Along this trail there will be some breaks to enjoy a cold beverage at a local village shop prior to reaching the pass. This trek will take us to Pacaymayu Valley (Hidden River). From the summit will hike another 1.5 hours down the side of the valley to our lunch spot (where our porters will have our dining tent set up and our chef will have a spectacular lunch awaiting our arrival). After having lunch we will begin climbing again to the second pass of the day, an additional 2 hours to reach the pass. This will include the time we spend in the beautiful Inca site of Runcu Raccay, located at one of the best viewpoints of the valley. We then start descending to Sayacmarca (known as the inaccessible village) and will stop here for a rest, enjoying the best sunset view of the trip, over the Pumasillo snow-capped mountain. Lastly, we will have 30 more minutes of easy hiking to our second campsite of Chaquiccocha (Dry Lake, 3600 meters). Walking Distance: 10km
Campsite Altitude: 2600m
High Altitude: 3600m
Accommodation: Deluxe Camping
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner with snacks
Level of difficulty: Easy

The sixth day of your Machu Picchu Deluxe Tour starts early morning once again. You need to wake up at 6:00 am to begin what most people consider the most beautiful day of the Inca Trail. On this day, you will get the chance to hike for about 1.25 hours in solitude as the other groups are well behind us. In this section of the Inca trail, there is the most fascinating of Incan pathways, which leads us to the cloud forest or, commonly known as, the high jungle. As we move on, there will be many opportunities to see the sacred and majestic Salcantay mountain, the second highest snow-capped mountain in the region. After seeing this incredible view we will reach Phuyupatamarka (3600 meters) the third pass that offers great views overlooking the Urubamba River, Machu Picchu Mountain, snow-capped mountains of the Urubamba mountain range and the archaeological site of Puyupatamarca. From Phuyupatamarka it will be a 3-hour hike down over 2700 steps to our last campsite of Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young). This is the most spectacular Inca site on the trail, after Machu Picchu, and the closest campground to Machu Picchu City. We will arrive early to our campsite, about 1:00 pm for lunch and then have the whole afternoon to relax and recharge our energy for tomorrow’s entry into Machu Picchu. In the afternoon, we have plenty of time, before the other groups arrive, to explore many Inca sites in addition to the spectacular Wiñayhuayna. Your guide will give you information about the significance of the sites and combine all the information given to you along the trail to prepare you to understand the purpose of the majestic Machu Picchu. The last night of our celebration we practice the Inca Trail tradition of reciprocity, organizing a ceremony of goodbye in the evening to our team of porters and chefs. This evening, our chef will prepare for you with a spectacular dinner presentation. Going to bed early will be necessary, as you have to wake up early, to be first at the Sun Gate to enjoy a few minutes alone in the peace of the scenery of Machu Picchu.

Day 7: Inca Trail Trek: Winaywayna To Machu Picchu To Cusco

Meals: Breakfast, deluxe box lunch
Walking Hours: 2 hours + 2.5 hours Machu Picchu tour + Optional Huayna Picchu Climb
High Elevation: 2650m

Your seventh day of the Machu Picchu Deluxe Tour will begin with a very early wake up of 4:00 am. According to your wishes and previous day’s discussions with the guides (as we prefer to be first in line for the checkpoint), it will be worth it to wake up early in the morning to start the tour. Your porters will serve a freshly prepared hot cup of coffee or coca tea delivered to your tent as you pack your bags for the last day on the Inca Trail. At 5:30 am we will enter the last checkpoint and hike to the first destination of the day Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) to get the first spectacular view of Machu Picchu. We then descend to the citadel of Machu Picchu while enjoying the surrounding views of this incredible valley. At around 7:30 am we will reach Machu Picchu City to begin our 3-hour private guided tour to explore the most spectacular and important points of the complex. Following the guided tour you will be provided a box lunch and have plenty of free time to explore Machu Picchu on your own or consider the optional Huayna Picchu Mountain climb. Following your visit to Machu Picchu, a bus will be available to transport you back to Aguas Calientes where you will have time to shop, prior to your return train departing for at 4:30 pm.
